Black Actors Named African Chiefs
Two men who could be regarded as acting royalty have been crowned with official titles in West Africa. Acclaimed actors Forest Whitaker and Danny Glover were introduced as chiefs in the ancient town of Nkwere, Nigeria after a DNA test revealed that they both have Igbo ancestry. The men were in the country attending the African Movie Academy Awards. Whitaker, who portrayed African dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland, was announced first. “This is our lost brother,” village elder Anyiam-Osigwe told a community of people who cheered the actor’s motorcade as it arrived. “We have found him and brought him home. It is only an Nkwere man that can find his way home after many years. We are a people from unparallel kingdom. We are the pride of Igboland. Today our brother Whitaker and his friend Mr. Glover will be made Nkwerre Chiefs and it is not an easy task to be an Nkwerre chief because there are only 30 Nkwerre chiefs in the whole world..” Whitaker’s title is “Nwannedinambar of Nkwere” which translates to”brother in foreign land.” Glover earned the title of “Enyioma” or “good friend of Nkwere.”
