Barack Obama will sign a bill into law Wednesday that extends health care coverage to 11 million low-income children.
The White House views the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program as a down payment on Obama’s pledge to provide universal health care by the end of his first term. The bill ran into some partisan resistance because it allows state for the first time to use federal money to cover children and pregnant women who are legal immigrants.
Former President George W. Bush vetoed similar legislation.
